Eastbound and westbound I-96 from Kent Lake Road to the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange will become a ‘Flex Route’. Work includes freeway reconstruction, rebuilding median shoulders for use during peak periods, sign upgrades, and active traffic management installation, including intelligent transportation systems (ITS) equipment, overhead gantry installation and ramp signals for metering traffic onto the freeway. Electronic message boards will alert drivers with speed advisories and traveler information.

This three-year project will be done in stages:

• • • 2022—reconstruction of EB I-96 from Kent Lake to Wixom, median and outside shoulder, median and outside shoulder work on EB/WB I-96, and installation of temporary crossovers to be used for traffic shifts throughout project
    • 2023—reconstruction of EB I-96 from Wixom Rd to the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange
    • 2024—reconstruction of WB I-96 from I-275/M-5/I-696 interchange to Kent Lake Road
