I-696 PHASE 2 (EAST) PROJECT OVERVIEW

Eastbound and Westbound I-696 from Lahser Road to I-75.  Work includes freeway pavement reconstruction including all the ramps, bridge rehabilitation of 58 structures,  one bridge replacement (Church Street Plaza over I-696), two bridge deck replacements, drainage improvements, sign & pavement marking replacements, freeway lighting replacement, traffic signal modernizations, and intelligent transportation system (ITS) upgrades.  Eastbound I-696 will be closed from US-24/M-10 to I-75 during 2025 and 2026 and traffic will be detoured. 

This three-year project will be done in stages:

  • 2025 – Reconstruction of Eastbound I-696 from Lahser Road to I-75.  Bridge replacement of Z03 (Church Street over I-696) and bridge rehabilitation work from Lahser Road to I-75.
  • 2026 – Reconstruction of Westbound I-696 from Lahser Road to I-75.  Bridge replacement of Z03 (Church Street over I-696) and bridge rehabilitation work from Lahser Road to I-75.
  • 2027 – Completion of I-696 median reconstruction at various locations between Lahser Road and I-75.  Complete pavement repair work on Eastbound and Westbound I-696 from I-75 to Dequindre.  Reconstruction of ramps within the I-696 and I-75 interchange.  Bridge rehabilitation work from I-75 to Mound including two bridge deck replacements.
